Everything you need to understand about EPDs and programme operators.

The subject seems complex: several programmes, acronyms everywhere, a vocabulary that changes from one country to another. In reality, everything stems from the same logic (an LCA, a common normative base) and is then adapted by programme. This page gives you both levels of reading: the base common to all programmes, then the detail of each one.

The base

The normative base common to all EPDs

What is an EPD?

A standardised document that quantifies the environmental impacts of a product across its entire life cycle.

It is a type III declaration (ISO 14025), based on an LCA (ISO 14040/14044), with additional EN 15804+A2 requirements in construction, and EN 50693 for electrical and electronic products. What sets it apart from marketing communication: the existence of a known methodological framework and verification by an independent third party.

One name per programme

In Europe and around the world, several institutions, called Programme Operators, work to bring methodological frameworks to market. An EPD can therefore have a different name depending on the programme chosen. Whatever the name, the method is the same and so is the information provided.

Why carry out an EPD?
  • Meet the regulatory requirements of your markets: ESPR, RE2020, CPR, etc.
  • Access your clients’ requests: tenders, distributors, design offices, etc.
  • Enrich your internal CSR strategies: eco-design, CSRD, carbon footprint, etc.
How an EPD is built, whatever the programme

Framework and applicable rules

PCR (Product Category Rules) and PSR (Product Specific Rules).

Collection and modelling

product data.

Calculation of impacts

according to the applicable standard.

Independent verification

by an accredited third party.

Registration and publication

in a programme operator.

It is this chain, essentially identical from one programme to another, that allows Qweeko to build a single LCA model and adapt it to several programmes.

Method

How to read a programme operator

Before comparing the programmes with one another, three elements to systematically identify in each:

?

Who operates it

The body responsible for the programme and its register.

?

The applicable rules

A common methodological framework per large product family, and methodological frameworks specific to each product category.

?

Who verifies

A third-party verifier accredited by the programme, independent of the declarant.

The six sections that follow apply this reading grid to each European programme relevant to your products.

In practice

Multi-programme in practice

Only once

Your data, one LCA model

You collect your data once. Qweeko models it.

→
Thanks to the mutual recognition agreements (MRA), an EPD published in one programme can be recognised by another, subject to conditions. You collect your data once, Qweeko models it and publishes your declaration in the recognised programme or programmes most relevant to your commercial strategy.
